Clear

90% of boards have no knots, 10% of boards can have a small knot 1/4” diameter or less for every 8’.
Flat grain orientation.
Occasional end split limited to 6” in length.
Wane limited to 1/8” x 15% of length on back face for 1” thickness, 1/4” x 15% of length on back face for 5/4″ & 2″ thicknesses.
Back face can have some skip dressing/torn grain or voids.
Natural wood characteristics allowed (burled grain and color variation)
Will contain both heart and sap colors, no blue sap stain.
Great choice when looking for a high quality appearance.
Cedar, Douglas Fir, Hemlock & Redwood can also be available in vertical grain. Hardwoods can also be available in quartersawn – rift & quartered grain.

70% of boards have no knots, 30% of boards can have a knot up to ¼” diameter every 1’ or up to 1-1/2” diameter for every 4’.
Flat grain orientation.
Occasional end split limited to 6” in length.
Wane limited to 1/8” x 15% of length on back face for 1” thickness, 1/4” x 15% of length on back face for 5/4″ & 2” thicknesses.

Natural wood characteristics allowed (gum pocket, burled grain and color variation)
Will contain both heart and sap colors, no blue sap stain.
Great choice for a value priced high quality grade with few knots.
Hardwoods can also be available in quartersawn – rift and/or quartered grain.

Tight Knot

Knots are sound and tight.
No size or quantity limitation on knots, can be star checked with voids up to 1/8” wide x 1/4” deep.
Can have black ring knot on face, but knot must be ingrown on back face.
Flat grain orientation.
Occasional end split limited to 6” in length and slight surface checking is allowed.
Wane limited to 1/8” x 15% of length on back face for 1” thickness, 1/4” x 15% of length on back face for 5/4″ & 2” thicknesses.
Back face can have some skip dressing/torn grain or voids.
Natural wood characteristics allowed (peck, ingrown bark, birdseye, gum pocket, burled grain and color variation)
Will contain both heart and sap colors.
Pine is limited to 10% blue sap stain, no open pitch pockets, but may have up to 10% sappy grain.
Great choice when a knotty appearance is required.
Hardwoods can also be available in quartersawn – rift and/or quartered grain.

Tight Knot/ Rustic

Knots are sound and tight.
No size or quantity limitation on knots, can be star checked with voids up to 1/2” wide x 1/4” deep.
Can have black ring knot on face, but knot must be ingrown on back face.
Allows through voids up to 1/8” width.
Flat grain orientation.
Occasional end split limited to 6” in length and slight surface checking is allowed.
Wane limited to 1/8” x 15% of length on back face for 1” thickness, 1/4” x 15% of length on back face for 5/4″ & 2” thicknesses.
Back face can have some skip dressing/torn grain or voids.

Great choice when a more rustic knotty appearance is required.

Rustic

Knots can be unsound.
Non-through voids can be up to 1” width x 3/8” deep.
Allows through voids up to ¼” width
Flat grain orientation.
Torn grain, heavy mineral or sap streak are allowed.
No limit on splitting length or amount of wane.
Will contain heart, sap and stain colors.
All natural wood characteristics allowed.
Great choice when looking for a rustic, busy, full of character and less smooth appearance.
